Study Shows Diet Can Cause Acne

Many of us have suffered from acne at one point or another in our lives, most commonly during our teen years. In the United States, 85% of teenagers and 20% of all adults suffer from acne, according to acne-resources.org. Recently, studies have suggested that Westernized lifestyle choices, such as diet, can play a major role in the occurrence of acne. A national study led in 2002 by a team at Colorado State University (1) indicated acne is a skin condition that is prevalent in fully modernized Western societies, but a rare occurrence in many non-Western societies where dietary habits “are virtually uninfluenced by Western foods.” We all know that hormones, bacteria, and genetics are all contributing factors, and there are several creams, lotions and cleansers available on the market to treat acne pimples. However, new theories suggest that what we put in our bodies is just as important as the topical products we use.
Studies have shown that a low glycemic diet not only improves the symptoms of acne, but also offers other significant health benefits. Researchers at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in Australia conducted a study in which they found that those who followed a low-glycemic diet not only had less acne lesions, but also lower weight, lower Body Mass Index, and increased insulin sensitivity. The glycemic index measures how different carbohydrates raise our blood sugar levels after consumption. The faster the food breaks down during digestion, the lower the GI count will be. Similarly, food that breaks down quickly will have a higher GI count. Foods with GI index of 55 or less are good for the body and skin, since they contain more complex carbohydrates and release sugar directly into the bloodstream at a slower rate. As a result, insulin demand decreases, along with acne breakouts. Insulin leads to acne by releasing other hormones that increases the amount of sweat and sebum. When mixed with excess oil or dry skin cells, it provides a thriving ground for acne. High levels of insulin can also cause high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes.
Foods with low GI indexes include broccoli, mushroom, fettuccini, and spaghetti. Cake, soft drinks, white bread and potatoes are examples of foods that are on the opposite end of the chart, with GI indexes of 70 or higher. A healthy, low-glycemic diet does not have to be bland. Instead of processed food, opt for those with more whole grains, such as wheat bread and wheat pasta. (You probably won’t event taste the difference.) Also, combine lean proteins like chicken breast, salmon and turkey with plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. String the meat and vegetables together on a skewer stick and throw on the grill for a healthy, summery feast.
Although diet alone will not clear up acne, it can lead to a healthier lifestyle. Combined with a proper skincare regimen and the right products, acne can be manageable.

Facial Exercises for a Youthful Complexion

By Van Le | The gym is often a place associated with physical fitness, strong muscles, and a healthy lifestyle. While we commit to hours each day at the local gym to work off those love handles or build the perfect six pack, we often forget to exercise the most important factor in our physical appearance: our face. While professional gym equipment can cost thousands of dollars exercising our facial muscles costs nothing. Exercise leads to stronger muscles and firmer skin, and the results are the same whether done on the abs or face. One of the best ways to reverse saggy facial skin is to exercise the muscles underneath.
Natural expressions – such as smiling – are a great way to work out our face, but the problem is we don’t do it enough or we have habitual expressions such as frowning or squinting that can contribute to wrinkles or fine lines. There are several other ways to exercise our face for a toned, healthier complexion, and they all can be done from the comfort of our own homes.
Forehead: Place your index fingers just above your eyes and pull down your eyes while raising your eyebrows. This facial exercise firms your forehead. Repeat this exercise ten times.
Lips: Suck on your finger as hard as possible and slowly remove it. Repeat this exercise ten times for firmer lips.
Eyes: Sit with your eyes closed and relaxed. While keeping your eyes closed, look down and look up as far as possible. Repeat this exercise ten to fifteen times.
Sit straight with your eyes closed and relaxed. Lift your eyebrows and stretch your eyelids down as far as possible by keeping your eyes closed. Keep in this position for a count of ten, relax and repeat it ten times.
Cheeks: Take your three center fingers and place them on the cheeks and push them down. At the same time, raise your cheeks by smiling as hard as you can. Keep your head back when you are performing this workout.
Neck: Sit straight and tilt your head back looking at the ceiling. Keep your lips closed and relaxed. Move your lower lip over your top lip as far as possible and keep for a count of ten. Relax and repeat ten times.
Double chin: sit straight in a chair and tilt your head back and look at the ceiling. Keep your lips closed and relaxed. Make your lips round, count up to twenty and relax and bring your head back to the normal position.*
As we age, gravity takes its toll, especially around the facial areas. While we can’t turn back the hands of time or stop the natural aging process, we are in control of factors such as how we age and how we can minimize the signs of aging. An overall healthy lifestyle, including a proper diet, adequate amounts of exercise, and everyday beneficial personal choices can all lead to a younger-looking appearance and increased personal happiness.

How to Properly Cleanse Your Face

By Van Le | Washing our face may be the simplest daily routine we can perform for a healthy complexion, but it is often a neglected subject when it comes to discussing skincare. As children, “washing your face” means to simply splash water on our skin for a few seconds. However, as our skin matures, it requires more attention and a proper routine, since properly cleansing our face daily is truly the foundation for fabulous skin. Essentially, the purpose of washing our face is to remove dirt and excess oil, unclog pores, and allow our skin to breath freely. At the same time, it removes dead layers of outer skin to make room for younger, healthier skin. Here are a few tips for properly washing your face.
First, thoroughly wash your hands with warm water. Grease, dirt and grime can transfer from the hands to the face by touch; therefore, it is important to get rid of any leftover residue before touching your face.
Second, wet the face and use a gentle cleanser to wash away the dirt, impurities and pollutants. Try an herbal product that contains natural ingredients and vitamins, such as Vivoderm’s facial cleanser. The saying “you are what you eat” didn’t happen by accident. More Americans are realizing that what we put in our bodies dictates how well we think, look and feel. Eating is the body’s way of obtaining the nutrition and vitamins required in order for the body to function properly. Consuming the right kind of food can increase our energy level, lead to healthier-looking skin, and boost our self-confidence. Americans spend billions of dollars each year on beauty products that promise to hide blemishes, cover under-eye circles, and conceal wrinkles; however, these products only temporarily fix what’s on the outside. In order to have truly healthy skin, we must monitor our food intake and eat food that allows our body to naturally generate that coveted healthy glow.
Water: Everyone knows that we should drink at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water each day, but not everyone does. Seventy percent of the body is comprised of water, which is vital to cellular replenishment.. Water also helps flush bodily toxins and regulate our body temperature. Try to limit caffeine and alcohol intake, as they can lead to dehydration and cause dull, dry skin. If you think water is too plain, try adding lemon slices or cucumber for a hint of taste.
Low-fat dairy products: Milk, low-fat yogurt, and low-fat cheese all contain vitamin A, a key ingredient in most anti-aging, anti-acne and anti-wrinkle products. Vitamin A strengthens the skin, helps repair and restoration processes and prevents wrinkles. The recent frozen yogurt craze has helped increase consumption of dairy products, however, it is important to remember that a cup of yogurt topped with candy, caramel, and other processed sugary treats can be counterproductive. Instead, choose healthier fresh fruit toppings such as blueberries and strawberries.
Antioxidants: Fruits like berries and pomegranates are filled with antioxidants, which have been proven to protect the skin against UV damage such as wrinkles and dark spots. They also protect the skin from free radicals, which are organic molecules responsible for tissue damage and aging. According to antioxidantskincare.org, “when free radicals attack healthy skin cells, they cause the cell to decay,” which can lead to cancer, cardiovascular disease and speed up aging. Antioxidants neutralize the production of free radicals.
Omega 3: Walnuts, flaxseeds and salmon contain essential fatty acids that prevent harmful substances from entering cells. They help regulate cell functions and maintain skin elasticity, leading to soft and healthy skin. A diet filled with omega 3 will result in radiant skin, stronger hair and overall good health. Our bodies cannot produce omega 3, therefore, it is important to add omega 3 to our diet.
Whole grain: Wheat products such as bread, pasta, and cereal contain plenty of vitamin B, which can even out skin tone and help the skin maintain moisture. Whole grain products help replace dead skin by stimulating cell growth on the epidermis, the skin’s outer layer. Increase your consumption of whole grains by replacing white bread, pasta and bagels with wheat products. Most likely, you won’t even taste the difference.
Makeup can create the illusion of healthy skin, but true healthy skin starts and ends with a proper diet. A healthy diet is an essential way to achieve not only radiant skin, but also a radiant lifestyle.
